Green Bay Packers A.J. Hawk says wrist is fine and he, not wrist, supports small dogs
Aaron James Hawk, more commonly known as A.J. Hawk, has found a way to keep him busy while the National Football League (NFL) and the players try to work out a new collective bargaining agreement to life the NFL lockout.
The Green Bay Packers linebacker has been working out after undergoing surgery on his wrist, which required the insertion of pins to repair damage to the ligament. He wore a cast for a few months after the surgery but says that he is “perfectly fine for
training camp.”
Hawk had surgery done after the Packers won Super Bowl XLV and still wears a brace when he privately works out six days a week.
"I played the whole year with it, so it's fine; it will be all right," he said.
Also during the NFL lockout, Hawk joined Twitter and says that he still feels “kind of weird on there.” He has also been busy raising his daughter Lennon, who was born in December 2010 with his wife, Laura.
Hawk has also been avidly supporting the “Big Guy, Small Dog contest.” Working with Mighty Dog, he has been trying to get rid of the idea that small dogs are “accessories for women who dress them up and carry them in purses,” according to the website for
Mighty Dog.
Aside from Lennon, another member has been added to Hawk’s family and has been travelling with him to 20 states, training camp and has been swooned with outfits and admiration for supporters. But the outfits are not made for a human, but instead Todd, Hawk’s
miniature Chihuahua.
"That's the whole reason I'm doing this with Mighty Dog -- these guys need to stop hiding behind these little dogs," he said. "They'll pawn them off, 'Oh, that's my wife's dog.' But then if you went in their house when no one is home, they're sitting there
sleeping in the same bed or hanging out.
"I'm here to say, don't be scared. Step out of the shadows with your little dog. And be comfortable with it."
The Packers players may hold practices for players only sometime soon but, according to Hawk, are working out on their own until plans are made. He said that the best way to practice and workout is for players to get together and run some seven on seven
drills.
Hawk also acknowledged recent events, specifically the death of Osama bin Laden and the military personnel that were involved in the raid. This is fitting because he wears long hair in the honour of Pat Tillman, who was a safety for the Arizona Cardinals
until September 11, 2001, the date of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He left the NFL and enlisted in the military to defend his country and was killed by friendly fire in 2004 while in Afghanistan.
