Green Bay Packers DE Jerel Worthy ready to prove himself, become more consistent
Green Bay Packers moved up to number 51 in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) drafts after a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles to nab Michigan State University’s defensive end, Jerel Worthy.
After signing up with one of the biggest franchises in the NFL, the youngster says that he is ready to prove himself deserving of the confidence the Packers hierarchy displayed in his abilities.
Worthy was criticised by many analysts for taking plays off and not playing with full commitment during his time in college and the youngster does not deny the accusations and says that he is fully committed to improve and become more consistent.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Worthy, speaking to the media said.
"People criticize and say I may take a play off here or there; there's nobody in the NFL game today or college or all the way down to pee-wee who plays every play full speed, full-go without getting tired. It's impossible.”
Adding further he said.
"All I can say is I'm going to come in and try to continue to work to be a lot more consistent, and I'm going to be a lot more consistent. That's going to be my goal.”
The Packers concentrated on building up their defence in this year’s drafts after last season’s poor performances in which the team’s defence ranked as one of the worst in the league.
Worthy in-spite of the problems with consistency also has some wonderful attributes that made him one of the most coveted players in the drafts.
General manager, Ted Thompson is highly impressed with the abilities of the youngster and said.
"Every time you watch him, he's extremely quick off. And a big guy that can accelerate up the field, you're clogging up the holes; you're getting penetration and causing chaos in the backfield."
He will have many chances to improve in training camp and during practices with the Packers.
Green Bay were one of the best teams in the league last season after remaining unbeaten for the most part and ended the season with a 15-1 record.
However, their defence had to be regularly bailed out by the offence and this is something the franchise has sought to rectify with the drafts.
