Green Bay Packers WR Donald Driver's future uncertain - NFL News
The Green Bay Packers have this offseason released some of their best veterans after concerns over their health and fitness.
The Packers have already released such long-term stalwarts such as safety, Nick Collins and left tackle, Chad Clifton.
Collins’ future was already in doubt after he suffered a horrific neck injury and underwent surgery and the Packers had serious doubts about his ability to take to the field again.
Clifton too had an injury riddled 2011-12 campaign.
Head coach, Mike McCarthy according to NFL.com said that decisions to let go of both players was one of the hardest decisions the franchise had to make.
"That is something you never get used to. That was a hard week starting with Chad on Monday and Nick, both with medical situations that led to that decision."
Adding further he said.
"Ted Thompson and I sat down, and the final question gets asked: if Nick was your son, would you let him play?
“So that's why we made the decision we did."
The future of another Packers veteran is also in doubt.
Wide receiver, Donald Driver who has had a glittering career with the franchise and is the Packers leading receiver in history has still not received an extension to his contract and will likely be released by the franchise.
Driver is currently appearing on a television show “Dancing with the Stars” and general manager, Ted Thompson in a media briefing refused to confirm whether the 37-year-old will return to the franchise this season.
"I would never speculate on something like that. He's dancing right now. Doing good, too."
McCarthy too did not comment on the wide receiver’s future but said that he is enjoying seeing him dance on television.
“He's doing a great job; keeping in shape, that's for sure. Not that that was ever an issue with Donald. It's a great experience for him and his family.”
The 37-year-old Driver has had a wonderful career at Green Bay after being drafted by the franchise in 1999.
Driver has made a career 735 receptions for a gain of 10,060 yards and scored 59 touchdowns for the franchise.
At 37 though his time is coming to an end and it is doubtful he will be back at Green Bay for the new 2012-13 season.
