Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy wants to give WR Jordy Nelson more responsibilities - NFL News
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson became one of the favourite weapons for quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the 2011-12 season and his brilliant performances have led coach, Mike McCarthy, to ponder giving him added responsibilities in the new season.
Nelson regularly played as a deep option for Rodgers in the previous season but his skill with the ball have led McCarthy to add more routes to his training and give him more responsibilities.
Speaking on the sidelines of last week’s National Football League (NFL) annual meetings McCarthy told the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“Jordy is a perfect example of a guy who was given more opportunities last year and performed outstanding,"
Adding further McCarthy said.
"We'll keep moving him around, probably play him in the slot a little more than he's played in the past. Those are the kind of things we continue to look at, give him more matchups, expand his route tree where he's maybe more of the focus."
Nelson put in some brilliant performances but started only nine games in the Packers 15-1 run in the regular season.
The wide receiver made 68 receptions for a gain of 1,263 yards and scored 15 touchdowns as he combined brilliantly with Rodgers.
McCarthy wants to make Nelson his go to receiver for the next season.
"Not that he can't run those routes, it's more about having the opportunity because statistics speak for themselves."
The Packers were amazing last season as they became one of the best offensive team in the NFL. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award as he led Green Bay’s unstoppable juggernaut to victory after victory in each game.
The Packers ended the 2011-12 regular season with a 15-1 record while securing the National Football Conference (NFC) North division title and entered the playoffs with home field advantage and a first week playoff bye.
However, the Packers were undone in the divisional round by underdogs New York Giants who defeated the favoured Packers 37-20 at the Lambeau Field.
The Packers will be looking to return back to the playoffs in the new season and will look to stalwarts such as Rodgers, wide receiver Greg Jennings and Nelson to once again lift the team right back into Super Bowl contention.
