Green Bay Packers defensive draft picks draw praise from veteran CB Charles Woodson - NFL News
The Green Bay Packers last season had one of the worst defences in the National Football League (NFL) and were highly dependent on the offence led by Most Valuable Player (MVP) quarterback, Aaron Rodgers to bail them out.
That strategy worked for much of the regular season in 2011-12 as the Packers lost just a single game in the entire season to end up with a 15-1 record.
However, their momentum ran out in the playoff divisional round against the New York Giants.
The Giants were brilliant in defence as they completely shut down Rodgers and this time there was no bail out for Green Bay’s defence who were completely overrun by the Giants offence who won the game by a comfortable 37-20 margin.
The Packers dropped out from the playoffs at the very first hurdle and it seems that lessons have been learnt from that disappointment as general manager, Ted Thompson concentrated on shoring up the defence in the 2012 drafts.
Thompson brought in University of Southern California’s defensive end, Nick Perry in the first round and followed it up by bringing in defensive tackle, Jerel Worthy of Michigan State in the second.
Veteran cornerback, Charles Woodson was excited that his team concentrated on shoring up the defence in the drafts and told the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in an interview on Saturday.
"There's always talk about Green Bay just drafting the best available player but I think this year that tells you that that's not the case. We drafted what we needed. And we needed a whole of lot of help on defense. Anybody who watched our season last year
understands that."
Woodson went on to praise the draft picks made by Thompson this year and said that the newest additions will greatly help the team improve in the new season.
"(General manager) Ted Thompson and (head coach) Mike McCarthy and our scouting department I think did a great job of bringing guys in that I think are going to help us right now."
Last year ended in disappointment for Green Bay but this year they seem to be ready for another push to the playoffs and the Super Bowl and the team will be a big favourite to lift the Lombardi Trophy this season.
