Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy receives contract extension
The Green Bay Packers have signed a multi-year contract with Head Coach Mike McCarthy. However, the financial terms and length of the contract were not disclosed.
Just a month after the Packers won the Super Bowl and less than three weeks after general manager Ted Thompson had his contract extended, McCarthy will be staying in the National Football League’s (NFL) token market for the foreseeable future.
"We are very pleased to finalise this agreement with Mike," Thompson said in a statement. He added, "He's a good football coach, a good leader, and a good man. I look forward to working with Mike into the future."
McCarthy’s previous contract was valid until 2012 after both he and Thompson signed contract extensions at the end of the 2007 season. Thompson’s contract was also set to expire in 2012 but he received an extension on 11 February, 2011. After Thompson was
re-signed, it was only a matter of time before McCarthy was signed. After all, he just led the Packers to win their 13th NFL Championship.
McCarthy said in a statement, "We were very excited to bring the Lombardi Trophy back home this past season, and we look forward to the challenge of continuing to improve as a football team and adding to the championship legacy here."
He added, "My family and I love being in Green Bay. It's always going to be my home, and we are very happy to continue to be a part of this community."
As of Friday, safety Charlie Peprah has also been signed. He started in 11 games during the 2011 season after Morgan Burnett was injured. He played very well in 2010, leading the Packers in the Super Bowl with 10 tackles against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
McCarthy became the second head coach to lead the number six playoff seed to win the Super Bowl. He becomes the third head coach to lead the Packers to the Super Bowl. Vince Lombardi, after whom the Super Bowl Lombardi Trophy is named, won the championship
in 1967 and 1968 while Mike Holmgren led the Packers to win the Super Bowl in 1997.
In McCarthy’s five years with the Packers, they have gone to the playoffs three times. Besides that, he also handled transitioning from legendary Packers quarterback Brett Favre to their new legend, Aaron Rodgers. Even more remarkable is the fact that the
Packers won the Super Bowl this year with 18 players on injured reserve.
McCarthy said that he would not change after leading the Packers to the Super Bowl title. However, that would be pretty hard to do, considering that he will be joining the ranks of managerial legends such as Lombardi and Holmgren. He could even have a street
near Lambeau Field named after him when, and if the new season starts, pending a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
