Green Bay Packers promote QB Coach Tom Clements to offensive coordinator - NFL News
The Green Bay Packers formally announced the promotion of quarterbacks' coach, Tom Clements, to the role of offensive coordinator, in a statement on Thursday.
Packers stuck with Clements for the role rather than looking outside for a more experienced coach and his promotion was never in doubt from the time Joe Philbin left the franchise last month to join Miami Dolphins as their new head coach.
Head Coach, Mike McCarthy released a statement, welcoming the move and said that he expects numerous great new ideas from Clements.
"Tom has been an integral part of our success and our staff, making it an obvious decision to promote him to offensive coordinator," McCarthy said in a statement.
"He has earned this opportunity and we look forward to continued offensive success in 2012."
Green Bay had one of the most fearsome offensives in the 2011-12 season as they went 15-1 in the regular season to become the National Football Conference’s (NFC) number one seed for the playoffs.
The Packers were top scorers throughout the season as quarterback, Aaron Rodgers pushed for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, with a string of extravagant performances.
Ex-offensive coordinator, Joe Philbin left the franchise this year to become head coach of Miami Dolphins after the end of the regular season and Clements hopes that he can continue to improve on an already formidable offensive roster.
"I'm happy that it's happened and I'm happy for Joe that he's a head coach, and I'm glad I was able to step into his place," Clements said.
"I've been a coordinator before, only for a few years. I've always wanted to get back to doing that and I'm thankful that it's here in Green Bay."
With Green Bay rebuilding again after a wonderful season ended in disappointment in the playoff division rounds, Clements’s appointment would be seen as a continuation of Packers' tradition, with the Head Coach calling the plays and the coordinator just
developing new plans and providing ideas for each game.
The Packers had a brilliant regular season with Rodgers emerging as the best quarterback in the league. Green Bay looked likely to end the regular season unbeaten yet a defeat to Kansas City Chiefs in week 14 ended those dreams.
Green Bay secured home field advantage and a first week playoff bye to qualify directly for the division rounds. They faced the New York Giants, who completely shackled Packers' offence to become only the second team to outscore Green Bay.
