Green Bay Packers quarterback Graham Harrell gives stunning response in preseason finale – NFL News
Amid the rumours circulating about the backup quarterback position in the Green Bay Packers camp, quarterback Graham Harrell came up with a superb performance in the final preseason game against Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
Harrell is hoping to get the no. 2 quarterback position behind Aaron Rodgers after playing two seasons as a third tier quarterback.
It did not help Harrell in his aim when he produced lacklustre performances during the first three preseason games.
It was a totally different ball game for Harrell in the final preseason game as he managed to finish 13 out of 15 passes while covering 223 yards.
He scored two touchdowns in just two quarters. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy appreciated Harrell for finally living up to the team’s expectation after absorbing all the criticism. He said:
"We talk about it all the time: It's nice when people say nice things about you and it's not so nice when they don't. And it's one extreme to the other, particularly at that position. That's part of the deal. I think he handled it very well."
Although Chiefs managed to keep quarterback Rodgers at bay in the first quarter, they seemed to face some difficulty in stopping Harrell later.
When McCarthy was asked whether Harrell was ready to take up the backup quarterback position, he looked a bit hesitant to clarify this matter. McCarthy said:
"I think he definitely grew through the preseason, topped it off with an excellent performance tonight. But we're not going to make any roster selections here tonight."
Overall in the offseason, Harrell has managed to complete 45of 78 passes, and covered 484 passing yards with three touchdowns.
Harrell was added into the Packers team after going undrafted in the 2009 draft. In 2009, he played with Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League.
If he gets the backup position, Harrell will then have the opportunity to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
