Green Bay Packers release veteran defensive back Charlie Peprah – NFL News
Defensive back Charlie Peprah has been released by Green Bay Packers as announced by their general manager Ted Thompson on Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
It seems to be an interesting decision made by the Packers. After releasing the three-time Pro Bowler Nick Collins back in March due to a serious neck injury, many believed that Peprah would be the starter at defensive back.
Peprah did not talk about his future after getting the news. He did take the opportunity to express his gratitude towards his fans in supporting him throughout his time with Packers. He said:
"I appreciate all the fans for their support. Even the ones who weren't supportive, I appreciate them, too. That made me work even harder. Man, it was a dream come true to play for the Packers. Not many people can say they played for a
historic franchise like this, and be a part of a Super Bowl team. It's hard to be happy about that right now, but I know looking back at my career, five or six years later, I know it's something I'll be blessed to have been a part of."
This news should come as a shock to Peprah who previously said that he was looking to have a Pro Bowl season this year.
The reason for Peprah’s departure could be the injury he sustained this offseason.
He went through a knee surgery due to which he was unable to participate in the Packers Organised Team Activities (OTA’s) and minicamp.
He was a bit slow to react sometimes during last season; the best example of it was the playoff game against New York Giants.
Peprah’s release will result in a bigger role for M.D. Jennings, who will play his second year in the league.
The decision could also mean more opportunities for rookie safety Jerron McMillian who is drafted in the fourth round of this year’s draft.
Perprah started playing for Packers in 2006. After playing the 2009 season with Atlanta Falcons, Packers re-signed him in 2010.
In the title-winning 2010 season, Peprah played 11 games. Last season, he managed to score 94 tackles, getting one forced fumble along with five interceptions.
