Green Bay Packers will not bring in veteran QB's for backup - NFL News
The Green Bay Packers are short of experienced backup at the quarterback position but they are not going to do anything about it.
The Packers have three backup quarterbacks on their roster after the arrival of B.J Coleman from Tennessee-Chattanooga as the Packers seventh round draft pick. The others are Texas Tech youngster Graham Harrell and an Arena Football League veteran, Nick
Hill.
This leaves a lot of inexperience to step in for Most Valuable Player (MVP) Aaron Rodgers should he go down with an injury or knock during the 2012-13 season.
The Packers were linked with bringing in Cleveland Browns veteran quarterback, Colt McCoy in the free agency after his starting position is under threat with the arrival of rookie Brandon Weeden as the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 drafts.
However, McCoy won’t be joining the Packers with head coach, Mike McCarthy telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Saturday that he doesn’t feel a need to bring in a veteran quarterback and is happy with the names on the roster.
"I don't think you just say, 'Hey, I need a veteran backup,' " McCarthy said. "We have the MVP in Aaron Rodgers as our No. 1, and I feel like we have really three candidates to compete for two spots or possibly three.”
Adding further he said.
"The roster will shake that out. It's our job as coaches to make sure they're trained and they're ready to go, regardless of how many years of experience they have."
This follows the same philosophy the Packers followed with Matt Flynn who also had little experience playing in the National Football League after joining the franchise in the seventh round.
Flynn though performed brilliantly in every game that he was called upon and after his record breaking performance in the final game of the 2011-12 regular season against Detroit Lions he became one of the hottest free agent properties.
Flynn has now moved on to join the Seattle Seahawks where he will compete in training camp to become the starter.
For now Harrell remains the number two backup for the Packers as the franchise develops Coleman for the future.
