Question:

Green Bean Growing Problem?

by  |  earlier

I got some green beans from England and planted them out in my garden. They grew really well, bloomed a profusion of bright red flowers but no beans came. I gave some to my neighbor and the same thing happened with his. We've had plenty of bees around so we are maybe wondering if this is an altitude issue. We are in Denver, Colorado. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

  1. Hmmm, I take it you have grown green beans of other types and had no problems with the set??    I don't have an altitude issue so never considered it with varieties of green beeans.  As a rule they aren't as touchy about night time temps as some other crops.  What I have noticed is that they won't set well if the soil is too rich, manure not composted well and leached of urea.  That shouldn't be the issue if you have had success before and didn't also split a new load of manure with your neighbor to work in.    If they are still blooming, don't pull them out yet,  they may make as the days shorten.
