  1. Just in case, make sure you call the INS and ask if you will need a permit to leave the country. If so, it is done at your local INS office, and its a quick process. They give you a paper with a pic on it that allows you to enter back in the U.S.

  2. Your immigrant visa is valid for year minus one day from the day of your first entry, which means you are right and you can use the immigrant visa in your passport instead of the green card. I don't know what your nationality is but Mexico might have some additional requirements. For further info about the country specific requirements for a tourist visa, see the site below.

  3. As others have said, this does depend on your status in the US and any visa you may currently have.

If you don't have a visa which allows you multiple entries into the US, then you'll need to apply for an Advance Parole document. This is a USCIS issued document that allows you to leave and re-enter the US without abandoning your AoS application.

If you filed for AoS after July 30 2007, then it's free to apply for an Advance Parole document. You need to file I-131 with the National Benefit Center in Chicago if the I-131 is being submitted in conjunction to an Adjustment of Status application (which your's in since you're waiting for your I-551 card).

See link in source for more information.

  4. You neglect to mention the type of visa you used to enter the US.  If you entered on a spousal visa, you aren't able to get a conditional green card for a year.  You are here on a visa for one year which allows re-entry.

What country are you from?  That determines whether you need a visa to enter Mexico. (Unless you are a Mexican citizen using a Mexican passport, obviously.)
