Green Comm Racing partners with Region of Lombardy to launch European Challenge: America’s Cup
Spain’s Green Comm Racing, which is the youngest participant of America’s Cup, has partnered with the Region of Lombardy in order to launch the first European Challenge for the 34th America’s Cup by promoting the sustainability awareness. With
this initiative, Green Comm Racing has tried to bring Lombardy and Valencia, two of Europe’s most active regions together.
Key officers from all partners gathered in Milan, the Lombardy Region Headquarters, to achieve their goal. The representatives included the president of the Real Club Nautico de Valencia, Manuel Pons, executive chairman Green Comm Racing, Francesco De Leo,
the president of Circolo Vela Gargnano, Lorenzo Rizzardi and officers of the Lombardy Region.
The reason for the gathering of officials representing all parties was to secure the institutional support of the Lombardy Region through the promotion of first ever European Challenge for the 34th America’s Cup.
The purpose behind the partnership between Green Comm Racing and The Real Club Nautico de Valencia (RCNV) and their engagement with Circolo Vela Gargnano (CVG) is to revamp the ties between Italy and Spain. Their alliance aims to enhance the research abilities
of both Italy and Spain through sustainability.
Speaking to the local media on the partnership with the Region of Lombardy, executive chairman of Green Comm Racing, Francesco De Leo said, “We are delighted and proud to have been chosen by one of Europe’s most dynamic regions to tap and enhance the entrepreneurial
spirit, the technological prowess, and the athletic excellence of a new generation of Europeans.”
He added, “Promoting the values of sustainability is not an issue relegated to one single country or region of the world. We are not just Italian, Spanish, or French. We are first and foremost Europeans and we need to inspire and engage the new generation
to take charge in addressing one of the most critical challenges of our times: climate change and sustainability.”
A massive budget of €54 million will be spent by Green Comm Racing for the development of new AC72 multihull for the 34th America’s Cup campaign. These boats will be launched on San Francisco waters in 2013.
With this new initiative, Green Comm Racing, the Real Club Nautico de Valencia, Lombardy Region and the Circolo Vela Gargnano are aiming to produce a new wave of European sailors picked from Olympic sailing trials, to promote sustainability across the globe.
