Green Comm’s bowman Javier de la Plaza happy with improvement: 2011 America’s Cup World Series
Cascais Trophy of 34th America’s Cup World Series featured a brand new challenger from Spain, Green Comm Racing, who showed an impressive performance on the first day of the event.
Although the team secured last place in the overall standings, they really put pressure on the nine-yacht fleet during the race and Green Comm Racing’s bowman, Javier de la Plaza is quite delighted with their improvement.
The Spanish team finished in eighth place in the first race of Cascais Trophy and earned three points. Their second race wasn’t impressive as they finished last, however, they stunned everyone in the third race when they were sailing strong in third position.
Unfortunately due to a problem to their yacht’s wing, they had to settle for an eventual 7th place.
Speaking to the local media after the first day’s race, la Plaza said, “Today it felt like the day you drive a new car. It's like the day when you are a kid and you take your training wheels off your bike and you have to ride with only two wheels! We are
still in the process of taking the training wheels off because that's what sailing on a catamaran feels like.”
He added, “However, the improvement from the first to the third race was remarkable. Every minute of sailing on the boat counts and that's what we did. Communication as well got much better onboard and we decided to attack. We have a steep learning curve
but I think we could cause some surprises in the last day of the event.”
The overall points table at the end of Day One of Cascais races is given below.
