Green Edge strengthens itself as Simon Gerrans joins the team for 2012 – Cycling News
After signing the Dutch cyclist Sebastian Langeveld earlier this week, team Green Edge has announced the signing of Australian cyclist Simon Gerrans and the 31-year-old has agreed to end his 2 year bonding with team Sky.
Gerrans raced in his first Tour de France in 2005 and impressed many with his brilliant performance throughout the Tour especially when he finished third on stage 17. Gerrans also holds the honour of winning a stage in all three Grand Tours, Tour de France,
Giro d’ Italia and Vuelta a Espana.
Simon on joining the team shared his thoughts as he mentioned that Shayne Bannan and Gerry Ryan has played an important role in his career and has been a big help over the past 10 years. He said, “I’ve always targeted the Ardennes Classics and after finishing
third at the Amstel Gold Race this year I’m looking forward to preparing specifically for these races again with the backing of GreenEdge.”
Gerrans further added that he needs to try really hard to go on and win the Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne or Liege-Bastogne-Liege and winning those races will be a big achievement. He stated that, it is very much possible to achieve those goals especially
after joining Green Edge and riding in the company of some of the best cyclists.
Team Green Edge who is waiting for its World Tour licence in 2012 has strengthened itself after signing the Australian as the squad for 2012 now includes Jack Bobridge, Stuart O’ Grady, Travis and Cameron Meyer, Sebastian Langeveld, Pieter Weening, Daniel
Teklehaymanot and Simon Gerrans.
On talking about the time spent with his current team Sky, Simon commented that, “I’ve had a really good two years at Sky and it’s been a privilege to ride with a team that has set the benchmark on professionalism.” Gerrans mentioned that he appreciates
that team Sky has understood him and has supported his decision of joining a different team.
Shayne Bannan mentioned that Simon is in the best phase of his career and his ability to win the stages at big events make him special and he always wanted to sign him since a long time.
