I am considering building a COMPLETLY green home, using not even the slightest bit of fossil fuels etc. For a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom home with features like solar panels and such how much would you estimate the cost to be?

  1. $100,000  ...........a better choice is a cave.

  2. I met a principal in a NJ architectural firm who exclusively designs green & LEED certified buildings.  His thought was that, with proper planning a green building cost no more and probably less than a conventionally built home.

    something to think about, eh?

  3. It depends on a lot of different things like where are you located and what the home would cost to build.

My wife designs homes for people and can help you if you are seriously interested.

  4. Figure about 80,000 - 100,000 USD for a 12,000 sq. ft. home with all the modern day creature comforts.

You will have to use a wind turbine and solar panels. The wind turbine should be about 8kw to 10kw.

Use triple pane low e windows, spray foam insulation between the studs, solatubes, self-contained composting toliet, energy star appliances, and reclaimed and recycled wood.

Lastly, you will need a well and some means of powering that. You can have an independent solar system with battery backup to power that. Put the solar panels ontop the well house.

Use as little water as possible. Do not waste water or you'll have to pump more.
