Question:

Green Human Waste Disposal?

I live on 9 wooded acres in the country. We have a septic tank that has an electric areator that runs/uses electricity 24/7. My water source is a well that has an electric pump. I am thinking if I simply go outside and poo on the ground I would save all the power used to pump the water to my toilet and the power to run the areator. I obviously would spread the piles around my 9 acres so as to to create a giant poo pile. I am also planning on doing an initial scraping with a clean stick to cut down on the number of times I need to wipe thus saving paper. Is this idea worth looking into?

  1. Try wiping with a used corn cob.

  2. You have an excellent idea. I grow corn just for a place to grow. My dog prefers the neighbors corn field. I figure we are doing our part to produce gasohol.

  3. There are things called composting toilets that will do the things you are wanting without the rain or cold being an issue.  It looks like a really tall toilet but you just cover the top of the waste with saw dust to keep the smell out.  Then you empty it outside into a compost heap to let it "cure".  Just keep in mind that you don't want to use that particular compost on any food crops.  E. Coli would still be an issue.

Or you can dig an outhouse.  The problem with that is you do not want it to contaminate your well.

  4. Since you don't want to contaminate your well, you might want to try a composting toilet.  I have heard of one developed in Sweden called a Clivus Multrum.  I don't think much of the idea of crapping around the property, even if you have 9 acres.  It would suck in the winter, and I don't imagine your guests would think much of it either.

  5. I have an outhouse as a back up if my septic systems goes bad.  Everyone around here does.  Crapping on top of the ground draws flies and for some reason flies really like human waste.  I know about that from disastrous camping trips.

  6. Yes it sound very GREEN.Or you could use the land to grow your own vegetables that would help you save money and fuel going to the shops. Well done anyhow for doing your bit!
