Question:

Green algae in outdoor pond?

by  |  earlier

I've inherited a pond in the garden of the house I've just moved into. There are no fish in there but the water keeps going green.

Does anyone have any tips on how to stop this?

Much appreciated!

  1. You can also buy water clarifying liquid (you can get it in most garden/ large pet shops).  We had the same problem and it only got better when we changed the filter in our pump system

  2. There is a product that you can get from pet shops that will controll algae, you just drop it in the water, but a pump and filter would be much better to keep it clean after.

  3. Barley straw is a natural way to keep pond water clear.  It is best put into the pond in early spring before the water warms up.

If you live in the countryside you will be able to get some from a local farmer otherwise it is available from aquatic and garden centres.

  4. It depends on your intentions with the pond if you plan on putting fish in....and what type of algae is it?  if it is the "split pea soup" looking algae and it smells the best thing to do is to do is have a pump and UV &biological filter running 24/7 or do it the natural way with plants and barley straw....Apparently the pond is receiving too much sun so adding waterlillies will provide shade for the water and

If you plan on putting fish in the you must keep the algae out as it will cut off the supply of oxygen to the fish.

My hobby is my garden pond filled with koi and goldfish and the water is so clear you can see pebbles at  the bottom.

There is also a blue liquid that is not harmful to plants that will provide shade and protection from the suns harmful UV rays.

I personally recommend a pondmaster pump they use no oil are made to run 24/7 and rarely ever break down just change the impeller when it's needed and clean the pump when needed.

  5. I have used Tetra Pond Algea Control, along with that,  make sure you run and clean your filter often. This has  worked for me.

  6. DON'T ATTEMPT to get rid of it coz it produce's oxygen far more than even TREE'S    AND  NO  I'M  NO   TREEE  HUGGGER

  7. Easiest way is to empty the pond, and take everythink out.

the most common cause of it happening is that soil gets into the water. you have to have a special soil that dosnt contain (i forget but think its) nitrogen & phosphorus. once they get into the water the algae have perfect water to grow.

since there are no fish in there, it would be easier to do if it's small. if it's a large pond just get some treatment tablets for it at a aquatics store. and just provent soil and other things falling into the water.

  8. You can try to get some kind of filter and leave it running 24/7 in the pond or you can get algae eating fish, like a snail or something. Algae is natural, but sometimes disgusting.
