Question:

Green bugs on aquarium lid?

They're tiny, a little bigger than the size of a red mite, they're brown-green, and they walk with legs.

What the heck are they? They keep hanging out on the dry spots between the glass and the black seal. They seem to explode in population any time I drop food on the seal under the glass.

I keep wiping them away with paper towels, and I keep the area fairly clean, but they keep coming back every day.

I'm afraid that they'll grow wings and turn the bedroom into something nasty. What do I do?

  1. I've had those bugs before.  For me, they lived on my floating plants.  They never invaded the room, keeping to the aquarium, but they annoyed me and made my floating plants less healthy.  I finally eradicated them by taking each plant out and killing all of the bugs one by one.  Their eggs, if they have any, are tiny and I couldn't find them to squish, but by killing each successive generation by hand I finally had success.

Try the paper towel some more, and really thoroughly squish them all every day.  If you have to, put your fish in a temporary tank and thoroughly clean that one aquarium.  You don't want to use insecticide 'cause it'll mess with your tank in bad ways.  But no, mine never grew wings or anything.  I just kept squishing them until they all died.
