Green card expiration from abroad

leaving the us to italy for a long time and still want to apply for passport from new destination.legally married to us citizen since 2003 and green card holder from 2005.wich are the possibilties?

if by a long time you mean more than a year, you will lose your green card status, you can apply for a re-entry permit that will allow you to be out for up to 2 years, but you still have to maintain an un-relinquished domicile in the u.s.
