Question:

Green hair?

As a part of the going green movement, I want to start making my own shampoos from natural ingredients. (I'd put this in health and beauty but I suspect I would get many blank stares and suggestions to just use Pantene.)

Any of you out there have any recipes for homemade, gentle, natural shampoos? I found a recipe for an olive oil castile, which seemed promising. However, it uses lye, which I would like to avoid if possible.

Thanks! :)

  1. "Watch out for: shampoos and conditioners containing petroleum products; hair dyes with carcinogenic coal tar (N.B. coal tar can also be present in strong dandruff and psoriasis shampoos); hairsprays and hair gels containing petroleum derivatives, formaldehyde, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance." - Treehugger.com

    Organic Hair Care brands

    Avalon Organics

    Terressentials

    The Morrocco Method

    and there are more.

  2. You can use castille soap, it doesn't lather like the rest but it does work.

There's a "no poo" movement that uses baking soda, I believe, to clean the hair...I think it takes some getting used to!

I use a mix of apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and water to combat dry scalp, although then I wash it out with a natural shampoo (store-bought) so it's not so oily.

    Good luck!

  3. The greenest hair would be to shave your head.  No shampoo needed, no packaging to dispose of, no need for other hair care products, no need for an additional towel, extra water use....how green are people willing to go?

  4. I heard egg and beer, vinegar were good for shampoo.

  5. I totally flashed back to my punk rock days when I read the title to this question.

This is something a bit different.
