  1. I was looking for an excuse not to mow the lawn and cut the hedges today. Thank you.

  2. LOL!  I used to hate mowing the lawn too, but my Dad made me do it.  It does seem dumb to water and fertilize it so it grows fast, then cut 'cuz it's too long, then fertilize & water so it grows some more ... I mean, WHY?

Maybe you could talk your family into reducing the grass in your lawn by planting a ground cover that doesn't need cutting (or fertilizing) and by planting bushes and trees in places.  Or get a family goat to browse the family lawn.  It's crazy to waste gasoline and fertilizer (made from oil) on growing grass just to cut it down again.

OTOH, global warming is too big a problem to be solved by not cutting grass, just all alone.  To fix the problem, we need big changes in our society's ways of heating buildings, getting around in cars and consuming useless stuff.  Some big investments in solar and renewable energy, etc. are needed, too.

But I like your grass idea.  Good luck selling it to your family! :-)

  3. I just showed your question to my wife and told her it made sense to me. She laughed and called me an idiot, so I better get off my but and go mow the yard.

  4. I think it would be much better if we could get the environmentalist to all hold there breath.  Can U imagine how much that would  reduce the CO2 level.

  5. When I was a kid people used to joke that if they had a cow they wouldn't have to mow the lawn.  Owning cows these days seems to go against the greenie mindset though, so who knows?  Mowers don't contribute to manmade global warming either but greenies don't like them.

If you let the grass grow too long the city will come and cut it for you and send you the bill.  Best to do it yourself!

  6. longer grass would absorbslightly more carbon. but no where nearly enough.

you need something huge like trees, lots of trees , lots and lots and lots of trees

like there was in all the forrests we've cut down in the past 100 years.

so no more slacking, get of your butt and mow that lawn ;)

  7. You could mow with a push mower.  We use electric, which is better, but is still pulling juice from the grid, which generates carbon.

A lawn is a monoculture and is biologically poor.  Replace the lawn with trees or shrubs and some understory plants that will provide habitat for wildlife such as birds and butterflies.  Lawns are an antiquated form of gardening.  People tend to rake up the nutrients -- leaves and debris -- and then spend money to fertilize, often doing it poorly as far as the plants and the environment are concerned.  If you do mow, use a mulching mower to keep the natural nutrients on site and skip the time and expense of fertilizing.

That said, longer grass does save water, so there's some small measure of comfort if you want to keep it.  For sure, let it grow a bit longer.  It won't solve the problem, but every reduction in generating CO2 helps. Carbon is generated in getting your water to your door, so even that small measure can have a minor effect.

Food for thought next time you mow.

  8. Stop mowing????  Could make for some interesting golf, baseball, soccer....etc.
