Saw them at wal mart. They look really cool and i want to get one or two. i have a 30 gallon tank, and its fresh water. Just three fish, a female betta and two black mollys... will it work?

I heard they like brackish water, will the other fish survive that kind of water?

  1. I dont know but one thing I do know is that all my friends that got fish from wal mart had there fish dead with in the first 2 weeks.

  2. They're brackish, not freshwater and will get sick and die eventually if you don't add MARINE salt...not aquarium salt.

They are best kept alone, but mine tolerates one molly that I have in there with it....they need at least a thirty gallon tank, no smaller...if you get two you will 60 gallons

It's ok to buy just one...puffers aren't schooling fish and don't get "lonely" so don't make the mistake of feeling like you have to buy two so they can keep each other company

They're not fish for beginners though so before buying one do your research on them and make sure you cycle your tank before putting them in...they are very sensitive to nitrate and frequent water changes are necessary to alleviate the nitrate levels ...much more so than with other fish...there's a lot more too them though...so read about first before buying one cause they are tricky fish to keep

  3. i would not put them in the same tank. I had three of them once. They are EXTREMELY dirty fish, and they are also carnivores. You feed them shrimp, but mine also ate lunch meat =/ They would end up biting the other fish, and maybe making them sick also with their dirty sliminess =/

  4. It is not the water you should worry about, those puffers are cute as puffer lover I have kept about 8 species of puffer from those you want to a 10 inch saltwater dogface.  Let me tell you about those, a 30 gallon can hold about 5 or so of these. They like meaty foods but they prefer shrimp in frozen chunks and live snails are their favorite. But you better move that beta and 2 mollys out, because puffers LOVE to kill things especially things with long fins(beta).  They are cute little balls of death.   Also make sure they get plenty of live snails to keep their beaks straight and sharp.

  5. they are brackish water to marine and need a species only tank.

  6. The puffers will gang up on you bettas, ur mollies i am not very sure, u don't have to have brackish water.

  7. as of right now no it would not work. if you got rid of the betta and kept the two mollies and converted your tank to a brackish tank they would survive. mollies are also a brackish water fish. i'd do more research on green spotted puffers before you buy. they are a bit more work than you'd think. they need a specific diet that consists of snails and other shellfish to keep their beak/ teeth worn down otherwise they will get too big and not be able to eat and will die. i have  29 gal brackish tank with a GSP and its a great fish. just make sure you do your homework on them and they are a great fish to keep. oh ya one more thing. the GSP's get pretty aggressive the older they get so i wouldnt be too suprised to wake up one morning and the mollies have chunks bitten out of them. good luck

  8. A betta can not survive in brackish water and although mollies can, putting mollies and puffers together is usually not a grand idea. Puffers are aggressive little things, and most commonly successfully kept in a specimen tank ( only puffers). Sorry!

  9. Green Spotted Puffers WILL need brackish water, and eventually, full marine conditions.  The Bettas will not do well in brackish conditions, but the Mollies would be perfect!  If you got a 10 gallon tank, you could set up a freshwater tank with the 3-5 female Bettas, a school (5-7, depending on size) Tetras, and a few bottom dwellers (Cories, Kuhli Loaches, Dwarf Chain Loaches, etc.).
