  1. It's harder with a rental, since you can't make changes to the property.

You can use "green" light bulbs, and replace the ones that come with the place's overhead lights.

You can recycle, producing far less trash.

You can hang insulating window coverings, opening and closing them as the sun or cold dictate, so you use less heat and cooling.

In fact, you can set the thermostat pretty low in winter, using sweaters and socks rather than heat, and use fans and open windows rather than AC in summer, safety permitting.

You can seek a rental unit close to where you need to be for work or school, so you can walk, bicycle, or take public transportation rather than drive. Maybe you can find a place where you can run most errands on foot, too.

  2. Convince the landlord to change applliances like washer, dryer, refrigerator and dishwasher to energy efficient models.  Convince them to use gas heating for the house if it is currently electric.  Install low-flow toilets and showerheads.
