Hello! I have alot of tomatoes on my plants but they don't seem to be ripening, just getting bigger. My grape tomatoes are doing nicely but my beefsteaks and Roma's are still green... and huge! What can I do to help them ripen before the bunnies and squirrels get to them?

  1. I have the same problem, what I have done is pick a few at a time (the fully sized ones) and place them in a bowl with some ripe bananas. They will turn in a day, I don't know why it works but it does. Other than that can you could relocate them into a sunnier spot in the garden?

  2. I have the same problem-As soon as they start to turn a little yellowish-put them in a paper bag in a closet-they will ripen quickly

  3. it might would help to pick them and put them in a window seal so they can get some sun.

  4. Normally, the Bunnies and Squirrels do not like Tomatoes!  Some Slugs and Larvae do, though.  That, however, is usually not a problem.

Unless the season is "growing to an end" then you should let your Beefsteaks remain on the vine, outdoors.  This way they will ripen naturally, with the sun, and have a much higher vitamin content and sugar content.  The flavor will simply be better this way.

If they are not ripening as yet, that usually means they are "happy tomatoes" and they want to get VERY BIG!

HOWEVER, if your growing season is "growing" short, you can take the tomatoes (still on the "twig" (vine??)) and do what we did in the "olden days".  You "Scare The Tomatoes".  This is how:

Just hang the twigs, from a rope or twine (or from a hook), in a very dark place and they will continue to ripen, sometimes for weeks.

Some people even invert them in a regular paper bag (brown one) so that it is "night" inside and hand the bag in a closet, or some such . . .  Do not forget they are there, though!

I have gotten tomatoes ripening over a month later, this way, in the kitchen.

    Been doing it for years!

  5. yes take a green tomato and put in a dark place, tomatos ripin at night, so once they are off the vine put them in a dark place they will rippin fast....
