Greenbrier Classic: Tom Watson returns to action on the PGA Tour
The veteran American Tom Watson will return to action at the Greenbrier Classic, when he will tee off at the Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Watson has not played regularly over the past few months due to injury issues. In total, he only managed to make only four starts in the 2012 golf season so far including the Masters Tournament, where he missed the cut.
Thereafter, the World Golf Hall of Fame member hurt his hand during the Encompass Insurance Pro-Am of Tampa Bay and missed each of the events on the PGA as well as the Champions Tour.
Last week, he made his first start since and tied for the 20th position at the Constellation Senior Players Championship.
“Last week was the first time I've played for, I guess, since the Masters,” the eight-time major championship winner said. “I hurt my hand and it took a while for it to recover. It's in good shape now and I'm getting my legs right now”.
He will now be making his fifth start of the year with an aim of improving his track record for the current season.
According to him, the injury is not allowing him to maintain consistency in his game for the past couple of months.
“I'm driving the ball pretty well. The iron play is a little sketchy. I've hit a few good irons, that's where I'm missing a lot,” he said.
While talking about the course conditions, he told that he felt some changes in the course conditions compared to last year that includes softness of the greens and the width of the fairways.
“You know, the golf course is a little different this year,” he said. “I played this morning; the greens are softer this morning than I remember them last year. The key to this golf course is how hard the greens are”.
In the meantime, Tiger Woods, the winner of last week’s AT&T National, is also confirmed to make his debut in the event. He is currently a hot favourite for a win because of his recent form on the PGA Tour.
