My wife is moving to the USA in a few months from sweden, we are gonna be getting married and then the whole change of status and all that. I'm a green card holder, does anyone know how the whole process works with getting her a social security #, work permit and all that, what the time line is in getting all the required documents, do we need to spend to get a lawyer and all that. Please help, whoever has information about the process or whoever has undertaken the process. Thanks

  1. Marry your partner so that she could validly stay in the US and for her to apply for a Social Security Card, work permit and all necessary documents.

  2. She can't change status if you are a green card holder.  She can't even live, legally, in the United States.  You obviously do not understand the process.

As a green card holder there is a wait of over 5 years for a visa to become available to bring a foreign spouse to the United States.

As a US citizen there is no wait for a visa.

You can only file to adjust status when a visa is IMMEDIATELY available.  Since no visa will be available for your wife for over 5 years she must go back to Sweden and wait.

No, she can't wait in the United States.  There's no such provision in the law.

If she lives and works in the United States, illegally, she's going to cause herself to be denied a visa when the time comes to get one, legally.
