What are some ways greenhouse gases are omitted?

Be specific, but clear enough for a middle-schooler to understand.

  1. Don't listen to the people that are trying to convince you to believe that global warming is a scam. I am a high schooler, and I you and I and our generation is going to be the generation that actually has to do something about global warming. The adults who think it is a scam don't really care cause they will be dead before the really bad, deadly effects will set on, we won't. They also don't want to pay their tax dollars to something that will not effect them, they are just being selfish. Anyways, to answer your question...

    1) Car exhaust

    2) Plane exhaust

    3) Industry exhaust

    4) Unnecessary burning, (i.e leaves that could be composted, trash...)

  2. Well the IPCC report "OMITTED" the FULL effects of the number 1 greenhouse gas = H2O.

    Edit:

    Engineer is wrong:  The oceans are the largest repositories of CO2 (50-60 times what is in the atmosphere) -

    Heating the oceans will release FAR more CO2 than man could ever dream of emitting.

    Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.

    We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.

    Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).

    One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)

    Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.

    Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.

    1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.

    2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

    It’s pretty easy to see the results..

    Melting ice sheets & glaciers

    Floods & droughts

    Great hurricanes & cyclones

    Seasonal extremes

    Seasonal phenomena’s

    Species extinction

    New & resurgent diseases

    There are many ways to stop both global warming and cooling from accruing or at least slow them down until we can discover a way to reverse it, but Stop burning fossil fuels is the biggest.

    I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

    I am in high school too and I dont believe in global warming.. **** im to lazy to explain this stuff to you.. Long story short: im freezing my *** off all winter long and mars, pluto n some other planets are warming too and when i asked my (environmental) science teacher why, she IGNORED MY QUESTION.

    why should i believe in global warming if the ice is back and nasa said we are entering a cooling period anyways?

  5. If we concentrate on CO2 which is where the main focus in the greenhouse effect debate is it's just like many before me says a natural part on earth. Plants are inhaling it and animals and humans exhales it. It's a natural cycle. The CO2 from our breathing is from the food we eat, which consists of carbon. As long as new green plants grows, this cycles goes on and doesn't disturb any balance.

    The biggest problem is when we use fossil fuel that has been buried for millions of years and burn it to produce energy. When we do, we emit huge amounts of CO2, but earth cannot take care of it all because it's not part of the usual cycle. Another huge problem is deforestation, as forests are great "carbon sinks". Without enough forests the CO2 continues to rise in our atmosphere.

    I bet someone around here will also bring up the oceans as emitting CO2 and that's partly true. BUT - the most important thing is that it currently acts as a sink because it sucks up much more than it emits, "taking care" of some of our emissions. Although this helps slow down global warming, it also makes them acidic which may be a catastrophic for the world's coral reefs within a few decades.

  6. Wow water is top greenhouse gas, wonder why people don't care?  Maybe because the surface of the earth is mainly water, humanity can't stop condensation.  

    so the focus is on what people can do:

    Humanity can reduce CO2 emissions, capture and burn methane (Which is 20 times worse per pound than CO2 for greenhouse effect), plant trees, replace coal plants with solar, wind, nuclear.  Fighting CO2 emissions is possible, fighting water vapor is another red herring.

    Lot's of people like to think they're geniuses because they thumb their noses at global warming.  Most are stating a political belief rather than any useful knowledge of science.

  8. This depends (not too surprisingly) on which greenhouse gas you're talking about.

    Carbon dioxide is recycled in the biosphere, but the added CO2 mostly comes from combustion of carbon in fossil fuels.

    Methane (CH4) comes from anaerobic decomposition of organic matter in places like bogs and landfills, and also from leaks in our natural gas systems.

    Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a byproduct of the production of nitrate fertilizers, and also comes from the microbial breakdown of nitrates in the soil.

    Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were used as refrigerants and cleaning agents and were released into the atmosphere, but production of these is declining.

    Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is used as an insulating gas in high-voltage electrical equipment, and leaked gas remains in the atmosphere because it's so stable.

    Carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) is a byproduct of aluminum production.

    Water, of course, evaporates from liquid and even from ice.  Its concentration in the atmosphere is controlled by other greenhouse gases, which determine how high it can get before the air gets too cold and the water falls out as rain or snow.

    Rick is, of course, wrong; the climate models spend a huge amount of time analyzing the behavior of water as both vapor and clouds.  What the IPCC reports don't do is talk about the behavior of *ice*, because there is so much uncertainty about it and changes are moving so fast.

    Lily K is also wrong; composting leaves emits just as much CO2 as burning them, just not as fast.  If you look at the Keeling curve, you can see the annual variations from leaves being grown during the spring and summer, and then composted during the winter.  If you want to keep carbon out of the atmosphere for the long term, you have to either pump it underground or convert it to a stable form like charcoal that bacteria and fungi can't decompose.  If you do this properly and plow it in, you wind up with a rich soil called terra preta.
