I'm looking for a reference that tells the total Canadian greenhouse gases emitted and the percentage of that total emitted from the oil sands. Anyone?

  1. whats green house gas

  2. From Wikipedia: For every barrel of synthetic oil produced in Alberta, more than 80 kg of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere and between 2 and 4 barrels of waste water are dumped into tailing ponds that have replaced about 50 km² of forest.

There are a number of other environmental impacts of mining oil sands. See the article below.

  3. The production of the oil sands, and their use , is steadily increasing.  I don't know that anybody's added it all up, but it's surely large.

  4. interesting question - it is difficult to predict the inputs and outputs of such a ridiculously big project that hasn't been done before

    maybe Sierra Club has something
