Greg Bird makes the most of his chance of familiarising himself to his indigenous roots
While talking to the official website of National Rugby League (NRL), Titans’ back-rower Greg Bird shared that he holds his participation in the Indigenous All Stars close to his heart when he also agrees that otherwise he is totally cut off from his native
roots.
He also shared that he is proud of his roots, while acknowledging it openly that he has very little knowledge of that all.
He continued and said, “My grandmother on my father’s side is Indigenous – we don’t really know a lot about our cultural background. There are a lot of deep-seated family issues there and I was told not to ask questions. But I know I’m Indigenous – I mean
I’m proud to be here, to be amongst the players in this team.”
Bird also appears eager to play parallel to the stars of their sport including Justin Hodges and Chris Sandow at Skilled Park in February 4, which is going to be his third time representing his indigenous background. He also seemed very excited about it
because he had never had the chance of featuring any of the games with them. He is hoping that ‘GI’,Greg Inglis will be fit to play with them.
He also talked about coach Laurie Daley’s widely appraised match winning tactics, that had seen the Indigenous side clinch 28-12 win against the NRL All Stars last year.
While referring to it, he said that they will find themselves more in line with the strategy after drawing in closer to the clash day. He also mentioned that right now everyone is easing down, getting themselves acquainted to each other, which is usually
the norm during the initial weeks. Bird talked about the significance of this phase when he got to know about his Indigenous youth. This paved way for him in gaining familiarity to his native roots.
He continued and stated that it is really enriching to mingle with the youth doing the cultural activities with them. He further shared that taking White Water World was as much enjoyable for him as it would have been for kids. His stance was to spend as
much time with them as was possible.
