Chappell appointed Australian selector
Greg Chappell has been appointed as Australia’s first full-time selector. Speaking to the media on Sunday, he said that while he wasn’t afraid of taking the tough calls as a selector, he was not looking at changing anything in the team currently.

Chappell also announced that the players who were selected for the Australian team needed to earn the right to be a part of the side.

Chappell will join a panel of selectors that is headed by Andrew Hilditch, and consists of David Boon, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Cox-c66230 and Andrew Hilditch. The chairman, Hilditch, will continue to lead the panel till the end of the World Cup in 2011, but Chappell will replace one of the other three. The decision on who Chappell will replace will be taken in October.

http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s problems have stemmed from the fact that they have already lost their number one ranking and are currently ranked fourth in the world. Three of their top batsmen are approaching 36 years in age, and there is a good chance that they may not be around for a long time. This means that the side could be looking at some kind of long-term planning, for which Chappell may be called upon to take the tough calls.

Already, Chappell has had the reputation of doing so, when he was the coach of the Indian team as he had been responsible for the end of Sourav Ganguly’s tenure as the captain of the Indian team. However, Chappell’s reign as the coach of the Indian cricket team had met with an unhappy ending as the side lost in the first round of the World Cup in 2007 and he had to resign from the post. Chappell has already been the selector for the Australian national side in the late 1980s, but resigned from the post in 1988 and joined the commentator’s box.

Chappell said that as a selector, there were tough calls that needed to be taken, but he also added that given that Hilditch was the chairman, his would be the tougher job.

Chappell comes from the Centre of Excellence, where he coached the youngsters in Australia and will have one eye on bringing on the fresh talent into the side. Chappell will also correspond with the various state associations and will interact with the media.

Chappell also added that he respected Hilditch as a selector and there shouldn’t be many issues in getting along.
