Former Australian skipper and legendary batsman, Greg Chappell, opines that the use of helmets, heavy bats and bowling machines by modern day batsmen in practice nets badly affects their stamina and skills to bat confidently and score quickly.
Chappell is of the view that modern batting techniques focus more on technology and equipment than skills, which is the reason why most young batsmen are failing miserably.
He argues that no batsman should be forced to wear a helmet or heavy gloves if he is not comfortable with it. According to him, the more comfortable the hitter is the better he will play.
Talking to the media today, Chappell said, “The extra weight in the helmet has caused batsmen to stand up straighter to keep their head upright so as to manage the weight of the helmet. What this has done is put the batsman's weight back more into the heel
which makes getting the feet moving more difficult.”
The legend is also against the application of bowling machines during practice sessions, saying that it damages a batsman's skill of predicting the ball's movement. He further adds that if a batsman practices with bowling machines, he will never be able
to face real-time bowlers in international matches.
The ex-captain said, “Next is the ubiquitous bowling machine which was a boon for the coach, but, which has had a negative effect on footwork. By removing the bowlers action from the learning equation we have unwittingly removed the most important part of
the learning process for young batsmen.”
Chappell, who has coached Team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556.  He has also encouraged international cricket managers to
adopt a system to recruit the future generations of batsmen with lighter bats and lighter helmets.
The 63-year-old hanged his boots in 1984 after playing 87 Test and 74 ODI games. The rock-star is honoured to have scored a century each in his maiden and last Test matches.
