Greg Chappell urges to include a spinner in Aussie side at Gabba
Australia’s former captain and selector Greg Chapell has highlighted that Australia should go with a spinner at Gabba when the first Test match begins on November 25th. With no more than 13 days to go before The Ashes, speculations are on the
rise about the squad of the Aussie side for the first Test match.
Greg Chappell, who is also part of the selection panel, has urged that he would not favour playing all pace bowlers in the first Test match. His remarks have certainly given encouragement to the off spinner, Nathan Hauritz, who certainly has been on the
receiving end in recent times.
Playing a spinner on a pitch that is famous for providing a lot of assistance to seam bowlers can be a big gamble for Australia. England, on their last tour took this gamble and played Ashley Giles in the series. He was a big disappointment in the series
as not only he was able to apply the required pressure but he also went for runs, a sin which the main spinner of the side cannot afford all the time.
Earlier, Ponting also commented on the Gabba wicket, saying England will struggle on it. Though he did not mention any spinner in the bowling attack, but he himself from his experience realizes the importance of a quality spinner in the side. He also said
that England came early to Australia and had a lot of time for preparation but they have not played any warm up matches at the Gabba, and they would certainly struggle on it. He also said that touring sides have always found the Gabba wicket to be tough.
But http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s full time selector Greg Chappell has highlighted that there should be a spinner in the side for the first Test. Nathan Hauritz is one player, who is on every body’s mind as he is the most prominent spinner available for Australia at the moment.
But Hauritz’s selection will be a big gamble for Australia in the Ashes series.
Last year Nathan Hauritz enjoyed bowling at the Gabba, and certainly selectors would take this factor into notice. He took 5 wickets for 57 runs in the Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 and was quite impressive in that match. Nathan Hauritz would have one big
challenge ahead of him to be selected for the first Test http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AS-Peter-c46174 Siddle and Ryan Harris are in line for selection after injury breaks. But Greg Chappell has confirmed that a pace only attack would be a big gamble against England.
Chappell said that this issue will obviously be part of discussion when all the selectors meet. He said that he is not convinced that four quick bowlers are better than 3. He was of the view that it is hard to go into a Test match without a recognized spinner.
He also said that it doesn’t care about the conditions and emphasized a balance in the side under any conditions.
Nathan Hauritz as a spinner has the potential to make things difficult for the opposition but Nathan Hauritz seems to be struggling in recent times. In the Indian series he was not at all effective, as not only did he not take many wickets but he was expensive
and was unable to apply pressure on the Indians.
Chappell also said that three quick bowlers, Shane http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 and one spinner would be the right choice for Australia.
