Greg Fairley another suspect in the charges against corruption by the British Horseracing Authority
The British Horse racing Association conducted a probing of a suspicious betting activity and charged Hawick Moor’s jockey, Greg Fairley.
His name is amongst the thirteen individuals charged with corruption allegations which have other prominent names such as Paul Doe, Kirsty Milczarek and Jimmy Quinn. The list also includes registered owners, Maurice Sines and James Crickmore.
Fairley has championed 85 races in just one year, which happens to be 2009.
He is accused of breaching with the horse racing rules such as ensuring that his horse runs on merit. He is accused of deliberately manipulating race results.
The charges on the 23-year-old accuse him of not only meddling with the racing results but also of conspiring and communicating to one or more betting exchange account holders for material gifts in return for information provided.
The information pertained to horses participating in races and Fairley is accused of this crime in four races.
The races took place between January 17, 2009 and August 15, 2009.
Fairley regularly boards for Middleham trainer Mark Johnston.
Greg Fairley could face a three-year ban if the charges of corruption are proved against him. Six months ban for breaching or meddling with betting and a three year ban if he is found guilty of providing inside information.
Apart from this, there is a severe punishment that he would not be allowed to ride a horse since he does not attain an honest position in a race. Punishment for such a crime ranges from five to twenty five years.
The Professional Jockey Association has advised jockeys that they must get themselves represented legally during the investigation.
The BHA acting chief executive, Chris Brand, commented on this situation, saying “It is of course of utmost importance that those charged are given a fair hearing and the opportunity to defend themselves and we will therefore make no further comment at this
stage”.
Greg Fairley’s father, Andrew Fairley, was a champion on the flapping circuit and he too has an established repute as former apprentice.
An Independent Disciplinary meeting panel hearing is to take place on October 20, 2011, that will decide and give a final ruling against those charged.
