Greg Henderson to lead BikeNZ team at Jayco Herald Sun Tour
Greg Henderson of Team Lotto Belisol is all set to lead his National Team at the coming edition of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour and the cyclist is optimistic that the youthful New Zealand team will be able to secure positive results to start the new season
on a high-note.
The cyclist is optimistic to get the right form at the four-day race before moving to the UCI Inaugural event, Santos Tour Down Under where he will represent the UCI debutant side, Team Lotto Belisol to mark the World Tour debut for the team.
Henderson played an anchor role in the team’s 2012 season, sacrificing his own chances to help the team’s star sprinter Andre Greipel helping him in winning three Tour de France stages 2012.
Team Lotto-Belisol and Team Saxo-Tinkoff, both were in contention for the World Tour spot and it was believed by the analysts that either one of the two teams will be allowed to ride at the top level of the sport in 2013.
However, UCI decided to deprive Team Katusha from its World Tour status, allowing both Team Saxo-Tinkoff and Team Lotto to enjoy the sports first division for the 2013 season.
"Melbourne is my second home town and when I race around here I get as many "Hendys" called out as anywhere else in the world. I have a fairly big fan base here now so I feel like it is home and I enjoy racing in Melbourne," said Henderson.
"Of course the Herald Sun Tour has such a huge prestige. It has been going for so many years. It has been on and off of late, and it is a bit shorter which is unfortunate, but it is a very historic race”.
The 36-year stated that the Jayco Herald Sun Tour will help him fine-tune his form ahead of the National Championships and then he will move on to support the “big German” at the Santos Tour Down Under, “which is the first big goal of the season”.
The he Jayco Herald Sun Tour will begin on January 3rd in Williamstown with a 4.8km individual and all the big cycling starts from across the world are lining up for the first major race of the season.
