Greg Jones makes an easy jump over Bradley Klahn into the final qualifier – Farmers Classic 2011
With the 2nd qualifier of the Farmers Classic Cup on its way, Greg Jones of Australia met in a head to head match against the American tennis young boy Bradley Klahn. The LA Tennis Court rushed up sooner than thought
as the home player had his support uptight. Playing each other for the first time the two players had an equal advantage on the hard court and it was hard to determine who would win.
The Poway, California born 20-year-old has not been much of an influence lately. Losing 6 of his last 10 fixtures, the American has been working up his way on hard circuits as well. Considered to be a grass court player, the world
No.749 did give up a good fight against the Aussie but could not really bag it up properly.
On the other hand, the Aussie had much more experience than the American. The 22-year-old stands at a massive 6’3” and his playing style is utterly professional. Turning pro in 2007, Jones has been at the highest ranking of 179
where as currently he stands as world No.222.
The match went electrifying as it went on each game and each set but no one was sure until the last set.
Starting off the first game of the match Klahn served the opener and lost, giving away a breaker making the scores 0-1. Jones made it 2-0 in no time and went on playing Klahn’s serve once again. The scoreboard changed steadily
to 4-3 until the next serve where Jones gave away a breakpoint to level the scores to 4-4. However, it took no longer than the next two games for the Aussie to pull off the next two games and the set 6-4 to lead the match 1-0.
However, it is always hard to retain the second set. The set had three breakpoints altogether, first in game 5 of the second set when scores were at 2-2 and Klahn served for Game 5 and after that in game 10 of the second set when
scores went level at 5-5 as Jones was broken by the American 20-year-old. Klahn surprised the 22-year-old Aussie as he nicked away the next two games winning the set 7-5 and levelling the scores 1-0.
The battle continued in the final set and got bigger as both players gave the toughest time they could probably give. The set opened up with back-to-back breakpoints and scores at 1-1. Levelling the scores once again at 2-2 the
serve went Klahn as he lost a breakpoint to give his rival the lead 2-3. Winning the next game Jones contained a 4-2 lead on the American. The lead was too much for the 20-year-old Klahn to catch up and eventually lost the set at 4-6 and the match. 4-6, 7-5
and 4-6.
Greg Jones is now in the final qualifier round to the main draws of the Farmer Classic Cup to face Nicolas Massu.
