Greg Jones takes his seat in the main draws; beats Nicolas Massu – Farmers Classic 2011
The final qualifying round of the Farmers Cup 2011 came to its end as the former world No.9 Nicolas Massu of Chile clashed with the Australian, Greg Jones. This apparently was the first meeting between the two. The match was played
at the LA Tennis Centre, where the Aussie took nearly one hour and twelve minutes to secure a 6-4, 6-0 win over the Chilean.
Massu, aged 31, turned pro in 1997. The old Chilean had his best times in 2004 when he was ranked as the world No.9. However, currently Massu stands at world No.484. Although he is an experienced player but every story has an ending.
Massu has been a clay court specialist. This is perhaps one of many factors that played against him.
On the other hand, Greg Jones, standing at 6’3”, is presently marked as world No.222 in ATP rankings. The right hander started his professional career in 2007. Aged just 22, Jones has not been in the best of his form. Considered
to be a hard court player, Jones qualified in the final round of the Farmers Cup beating Michael McClune in earlier stage.
Serving first, the Aussie kicked of the match and the scorecard 1-0. Supposedly the match should’ve gone steady but the Aussie shook the Chilean with thousand jolts of electricity. The first set of the match ended up 6-4 with a
close battle as the Aussie took lead totalling 31 points against 28 of Nicolas Massu. Winning 2 breakpoints, Jones bagged the set with 18 service points and 13 returners to take the lead in the match 1-0.
However, the shocker was yet to come.
The winner, Greg Jones won the next set with a total of 27 points. He made 7 opportunities to win a breakpoint and succeeded in 3 of them. At the end, the 2nd set score was 6-0 to Jones. The match ended 6-4, 6-0.
The overall match summarized with Jones totalling 58 points that included 30 service and 28 returners. 81 percent of his 1st serves were bang on target and won him points.
The second set barely took time as the 22-year-old Australian bombed the former world No.9 with blazers. Nicolas went on winning no games in the second set and went home with a bag full of embarrassment.
Greg Jones sits in the main draws and will play against Alex Bogomolov Jr., the American, in the opener.
