Greg Norman digs at Tiger Woods while Jack Nicklaus hails him as the most talented kid on the planet
Tiger Woods may not be playing for a while now as he failed to qualify for the FedExCup Playoff Championship, but he somehow manages to stay in the headlines every now and then. The former World Number One will be part of the field at the President’s Cup,
primarily on Captain Fred Couples personal recommendation although many of the critics have lamented Couples’ decision to lean on an out-of-form player.
Greg Norman, Captain of the International team has deemed it as the most appropriate time to dig on Woods’ poor condition and stated that his bid to overtake Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major titles is quite unlikely. Norman went to the extent saying that
Woods will not win a single major let alone, breaking Nicklaus’s record.
Norman was quoted as saying, “Now there are so many distractions, and people are looking for things that are wrong with Tiger now, so he’s got to deal with that on a day-to-day basis, like every other mortal has to do, right? It’s very hard for him to have
that focus. And the more he shuts people off, the worse it gets.”
Norman, better known as the ‘Great White Shark’, had a blistering run before the advent of Tiger Woods era in the sport. The Aussie was so overwhelmingly marginalised by Woods’ trailblazing decade that he only ended up winning two majors in his career.
Since last week, the debate about Woods’ condition and speculations about his career ahead have come back to life and like always, Nicklaus supported the 14-major-winner in his attempt to break the glorious record.
Nicklaus said, “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course, the space between your ears. I mean Tiger has a great work ethic, he’s a great competitor, the most talented kid on the planet right now. He’s not going to go away.”
The American and International teams will be pitched in a tight battle at the Royal Melbourne, where the International team has a strong record. They have gone to win all the eight titles and have never lost to the American side.
Woods has now dropped down to number 49th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and is likely to fall out of the top-50 after the concluding event of FedExCup Championship, the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. He has not won a single
title for the last two years and has been battling several injuries since mid-year. He also missed two of the major events this year, including the Open Championship and US Open. He came back to tee-off at the PGA Championship, but failed to make the cut.
