Greg Norman makes a solid start at the Constellation Senior Players Championship
Greg Norman carded a three-under par 67 in the opening round of the Constellation Senior Players Championship to tie for the seventh position at the Fox Chapel Golf Club, in Pittsburgh, on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Norman did not have a great start to his round, as he suffered a bogey on the first hole. The very next hole saw him create an eagle chance that he missed and two-putted for a birdie.
A birdie-bogey-birdie streak starting from the seventh hole allowed him to go one-under for the round through the front nine.
Thereafter, he stunned his opponents with a 45-footer for a birdie on the 11th hole. Another two birdies on the 13th and 18th hole against a lone bogey settled him three strokes behind the leader, Bruce Vaughan.
Overall, it was a great round posted by Norman considering the fact that he returned to action on the Champions Tour following his absence for the last three years.
While making the announcement for his participation in the event, he told that he did not consider adding any further event to his busy schedule.
Right from the start of the round, he looked as fit as he was 30 years ago. His putting was among the best in the field.
"All of us walk off the golf course and say we could have made a few more putts, but nothing has changed from 30 years ago," Norman said.
He is now looking forward to adding another good round on Friday that can help him get in a better position while entering the final two rounds.
If he succeeds in recording a victory at Fox Chapel, he will get a chance to play the PGA Tour’s Players Championship in 2013.
Jim Thorpe and Bill Glasson were the other two players to join him on the leaderboard after carding the same score as Norman had.
In the meantime, the US Presidents Cup team captain Fred Couples carded a four-under par 66 to share the third position on the leaderboard.
He told that he could have done even better if he had had some proper rest prior to coming to the field on Thursday.
