Greg Norman throws his weight behind Tiger Woods after his poor performance in PGA Championship
Time is surely flying for the ailing Tiger Woods who has missed another cut at the major event, the PGA Championship in a span of two years. Many of the sports fans are now regarding it as the change of guard in the sport which was overwhelmingly dominated
by Woods for the past almost 15 years. He missed the cut at the Open Championship in 2009 and has not won a single event for more than two years now.
Woods has already missed two other majors of the season, the US Open and the Open Championship and has now dropped down to 33rd in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Nothing has come out what could have given any hope to his huge fan base in these
troubled times but International President's Cup captain Greg Norman appears to be hanging in for Woods to make a comeback.
The President’s Cup captain said, “He’ll come back and win, there’s no question -he’s just too good a player. But losing his intimidation factor is probably the biggest thing. He just walked out there and he was a hard guy to beat. Now he’s trying to beat
them instead of them trying to beat him. The kids growing up haven’t seen Tiger’s dominance. The role reversal is the big difference.”
Norman’s rhetoric for the former world number is not really misplaced but probably ill-timed after his sloppy performance in the 93rd PGA Championship where he failed to make the cut with a staggering six shots. Woods shot the worst opening round
of his major starts with seven-over, 77 and posted another disappointing three-over, 73 to finally miss the cut.
The 14-major-winner stepped into the last major of the season after his disappointing run at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club just a week ago and was hoping to post a strong finish at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Greg Norman, better known as the “Great White Shark” will be leading the International team at this year’s President Cup against the American team which will be led by the seasoned Fred Couples. Woods is still waiting for Couples decision for the remaining
two slots and will be hoping to break into the field owing to his previous career records on the President’s Cup.
Couples will be deciding about the remaining berths in a matter of weeks and is now most likely to go for the young American players who have won an event on the tour in 2011.
Norman’s statements about Woods probably owes its roots to the fact that Couples will be shortly deciding about the President’s Cup team and Woods being a long time friend, logically spurred Norman to speak his liking for the former champion. 56-year-old
Norman is one of the most successful Australian golfers of recent times and has won no fewer than 88 professional events across the world.
