Greg O’Connor will be seen back in action at the Oceanic Football Confederation Futsal Cup
He will be once again featuring in the Futsal White squad from New Zealand. The team will be looking for a major win at the championship to book a place in the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.
Greg O’Connor has played in Wellington with Western Suburbs. He was on the Palmerston North Boys’ High School football team. He has also featured in the team of the University of Tampa for the year 2009.
He tried his best to feature amongst the top teams from the top clubs of the United States of America, but things did not work out for him. He was included in the last season of the Palmerston North Marist, New Zealand but could not play due to an injury.
He made his debut in Futsal as a striker for Maycenvale United in the Central League. Greg O’Connor said, “There’s been a huge development in the last few years. A lot of the big international players in South America and Europe grew up playing Futsal.”
O’Connor will be part of the 12-member Futsal White team that will be featuring in the OFC Futsal Championship. The championship will start next week in Fiji. The strongest team in the Oceanic region is from the Solomon Islands. They have won the championship
thrice and are currently in good form to be one of the toughest competitors of the title at the championship.
Fate is in favour of the New Zealand Futsal squad as they have a place in Group A of the draws. They will be playing against the hosts Fiji, Vanuatu and Kiribati. Greg is hopeful for the team that they will make it to the mega Futsal event next year, which
will be held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Kiwi team is expecting to face tough competition. O’Connor said, “There’s a lot of strong competition over there, especially with the Solomons.”
The best team will be making a way to the FIFA Futsal championship. They will be competing against the best Futsal teams from around the World.
