Greg Owen rebounds strongly in-between the opening round at the RBC Canadian Open
After the first two holes of the opening round at the RBC Canadian Open, Greg Owen was three-over for the round. At the end of 18 holes, he was sharing the second spot with a seven-under par 63.
It was definitely one of the best comebacks that Owen has made during his career. Other than the first two holes, Owen created birdie chances on almost each of the holes that he played.
He was accurate, precise and focused while played each shot at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club. In total, he managed to score eight birdies and an eagle on the final 16 holes that he played.
“I putted pretty well. I think you shoot 63 you have to putt well, so that was the strength of my game today, which is unusual,” he said.
“It's not a long golf course. Hit the fairways and then give yourself as many chances as you can, and that's what I did today. Got off to a rough start, but I played pretty solid from then on”.
According to him, he was not having a great time with his putter for the last few years. However, he found the right touch in Hamilton and used it at its best.
“Today it (putting) was just something that I was expecting somewhere along the line because I've worked hard at it. It's something I'm continuously working at, and it's just nice to feel comfortable and hit the ball where I'm looking,” he said.
Meanwhile, William McGirt also joined him on the leaderboard after almost a similar performance. He also started on the back nine of the course as Owen did and suffered a bogey on the 11th hole.
Thereafter, he followed Owen’s style and recorded five birdies on the next seven holes that he played. The front nine witnessed him record another three birdies to get into the share of the second position.
Robert Garrigus registered a bogey-free six-under par 64 to take the fourth spot on his own.
Bo Van Pelt, Charl Schwartzel, Vijay Singh and four other players were further a stroke back to share the fifth position.
