Two guys that never lived up to expectations. 15 rounds and both at their best.

  1. Greg Page had some talent but he never reached his full potential because he was a very lazy fighter.  He has the skill to out-box Cooney.  However, conditioning will always help a fighter over-come a skills deficit if he is able to employ the right tactic.  IOW,  If Page has a better jab and more speed and better footwork, how do you stop him from beating you silly?

Cooney wasn't a very good boxer at all.  There are two things that can be said for him.  He was always in shape and he had a decent jab.  The Power thing is a given.

There are not many times that Page showed up in shape so I have to go with the realistic point of view that he would not be in supreme shape here either.  I just don't see him taking Cooney too seriously because he never took any opponent serious enough to show up in shape.

Page would out-jab and score often on Cooney in the first 3 rounds.  Cooney gave up against Spinks because he was no longer motivated.  However, against Holmes, he gave a much better account of himself.  He would score with an occasional jab in the early rounds but find himself behind 4-zip at the beginning of the 5th.

Page would come close to knocking Gerry down in the 5th but Cooney would survive without hitting the canvas.  Page would tag him almost at till but Cooney doesn't become discouraged.

In round 6 Cooney hurts Page with a monsterous left hook to the body.  Page doesn't run but continues to jab and throw hooks.  However, he is still visibly hurt and Gerry can't land another hook as Page clinches or covers well.

In round 7 Page is not very active and Gerry is now relying heavily on the hook.  He misses often but keeps trying.  Page guards against the hook well but doesn't see the right that grazes his head.  Another clubbing right to the head and Page steps back momentarily.  His back is against the ropes and Cooney lands another hard left to the body.  This time Page doesn't cover very well and Cooney lets loose.

Two more hooks to his soft body and Page seems to have had enough.  He attempts to cover but Cooney lands an uppercut-right-hook-hook-right to head-hook to jaw-hook to body..............................the referee steps in.

    Cooney by TKO in 7

  2. the page that went the distance with tubbs and witherspoon would have too much stamina for cooney, but cooney always had a punchers chance.

so, page by 12  or 13 round stoppage, or cooney in 6.

but having said that, when frank bruno challenged oliver mc call for the title, i predicted it would be bruno early or mc call late, and i got that one wrong too.

  3. Even though they thought Page would be the next Ali because he looked  a lot like Ali, he never had the chinn Ali had so I would have to say with Cooney's power he would knock him out.
