Greg Schiano wants to take Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl - NFL News
Greg Schiano on Friday, January 27th, 2012 addressed reporters for the first time as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and laid out his plans to make the struggling franchise into future Super Bowl Champions.
Schiano was hired by Tampa Bay after undertaking a thorough search of candidates for a new head coach, following the sacking of coach Raheem Morris from the job.
Schiano told reporters that he is here to get the Buccaneers back among the elite.
"I don't believe in doing anything except to be the best, we're going to try to be the best starting today. How long that's going to take, I can't tell you that. ... But when our best is the best, we'll be Super Bowl champs."
Raheem Morris was fired by the Buccaneers after his team went 4-12 during the 2011-12 regular season and showcased some of the most poor performances ever witnessed.
Morris was unable to stem the tide of losses as Tampa Bay lost ten games in a row ending a promising season which started with a 4-2 record in ignominy.
Tampa Bay looked high and low for a new head coach with at least ten candidates reportedly interviewed to take over the role.
A few days ago it seemed that the search was over as inside sources revealed that the Bucs were discussing a contract with Oregon University coach Chip Kelly who led the college side to a Rose Bowl trophy this year.
Kelly however, refused the offer and decided to remain in Oregon.
Tampa Bay then asked ex-Green Bay Packers' coach, Mike Sherman to come in for a second interview but surprised everyone on Thursday when they announced the hiring of Schiano on a five-year contract.
Schiano has previously been offered various roles in the National Football League (NFL) but has refused to accept any to stay with the Rutgers.
"There's been several opportunities to go to places that were quote, unquote bigger names or bigger programs," the coach added. "And at times I listened. But when I tried to put myself there, it just didn't feel good. ... This felt right."
Schiano spent 11 successful years with the Rutgers as he changed the Scarlet Knights into one of the best football teams in the college circuit.
Now Schiano will be looking to replicate the same scenario on the bigger NFL stage as he coaches a talented yet directionless Buccaneers side.
The fans and management have great expectations from Schiano to return the Buccaneers to their glory days and return the franchise to the playoffs in 2012-13.
