Greg Van Avermaet not positive for the Milan-San Remo 2012
Greg Van Avermaet is all set to represent Team BMC at the Milan-San Remo. The cyclist had to abandon the Tirreno-Adriatico after the injury just ahead of the final time trial stage.
He told Sporza, “It started with a blister, which then started to inflame. A few years ago, I also had an inflammation of the heel. Rest would help but I don’t want to do that”.
The Belgian has not secured any victories in the 2012 season, despite his close finishes at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the Strade Bianche.
He finished fifth during both the races and is hoping to open his winning account at the fourth World Tour race of the year.
Greg started riding professionally with Team Bodysol-Win for Life-Jong Vlaanderen in 2006 and joined Team Predictor-Lotto in 2007.
He accepted an offer from Team BMC after spending a period of four years with Team Lotto.
Avermaet had a splendid 2011 season and achieved a number of victories during his first year with the American team.
He grabbed the overall position at the Tour de Wallonie and also claimed the fifth stage of the race.
The 26-year-old secured the sixth stage of the Tour of Austria and also succeeded at the points classifications of the race.
He finished first at the Paris-Tours, second at the Tour of Belgium, third at the Clasica de San Sebastian and seventh during the Liege-Bastogne-Liege in the past season.
Greg was looking good during the 2011 version of the Milan-San Remo and occupied the 9th overall position at 'The race between the two seas'.
He is not in the best of forms to claim the podium during the race, “I’ll wait and see how it goes, but it will hardly heal by Saturday. I’m not really optimistic for San Remo,” he noted.
The 102nd edition of the Milan-San Remo is scheduled on March 17th and all the top cycling teams are eyeing the Italian race as one of the biggest goal of their season yet.
Milan-San Remo is the fourth big race of the 2012 season and the winner will be awarded with 100 UCI points.
The second and the third place holders will achieve 80 and 70 points respectively.
