Go Soeda beats Greg Jones 6-3, 6-3
Ninth seed Go Soeda of Japan will make his first appearance in the main draw as he defeated world number 209 Greg Jones of Australia in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the final qualifier at the US Open in New York on Friday. The Japanese
took one hour and 34 minutes to undo his opponent in a one-sided contest.
Soeda made a good start as he broke the Australian in the third game of the first set and held his serve in the next game to build a 3-1 lead. The Japanese broke Jones again in the ninth game, sealing the set 6-3.
The Kanagawa resident hit the first blow in the second set as he broke Jones in the fourth game and consolidated on it, grabbing a 4-1 lead. The Australian broke back in the seventh game to reduce the trail to 3-4. However, Soeda
grabbed two consecutive games after that, breaking Jones in the eighth game and serving out the set at 5-3. The right-handed delivered three aces and capitalised on two of the three break point opportunities he created on the Australian’s serve in the second
set.
Soeda is drawn to meet Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the first round of the main draw.
Joao Souza defeats David Goffin 7-5, 7-5
After losing in the first round of the qualifying draw for the last three years, Joao Souza’s hard work finally paid off as he ousted world number 241 David Goffin of Belgium in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 to qualify for the main draw
of the US Open for the first time. The match lasted for an hour and 33 minutes.
Goffin drew the first blood as he broke the Brazilian in the fifth game and held his next service game to take a 4-2 lead. Souza broke back in the tenth game to equalise the score at 5-5. The Brazilian held his serve in the following
game and broke again in the twelfth game, capturing the set 7-5.
With winning momentum on his side, Souza broke the Belgian in the second game of the second set and consolidated on it to build a 3-0 lead. Goffin broke back in the seventh game and won his following service game, levelling the
score at 4-4. The Brazilian drew the final blood, breaking the Belgian at 6-5 and sealing the set 7-5.
Souza will meet unseeded Robby Ginepri of USA in the opening match of the main draw.
