Gregg Williams cooperating with NFL while performing duties for St. Louis Rams – NFL News
St. Louis Rams have once again reiterated that they will not present their stance on the scandal revolving around their defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who introduced ‘pay for performance’ system while coaching New Orleans Saints.
Rams’ management further informed on Thursday, March 8, 2012, that Williams is completely cooperating with the National Football League (NFL) in its investigation of the matter.
As per the statement issued by Rams, Williams is performing his duties with the team and at the same time cooperating with the league in its investigation. The statement also said that Rams would not present any stance as long as the league is working on
the matter.
Rams’ chief operating officer, Kevin Demoff, said in the statement:
"Coach Williams has shown contrition for his actions and continues to cooperate with the NFL in this investigation.”
According to an NFL investigation, which was made public last week, Williams introduced a bounty system and encouraged his players to knock out opponents and get monetary rewards in return.
The bounty system was widely criticised, but it also attracted some supporters. Some players and coaches lambasted this foul practice, but some also spoke in its favour. However, Rams are yet to present their viewpoint.
Williams spent three years with Saints and the investigation alleged that he was involved in this malpractice throughout his tenure.
Different reports also suggested that the league might initiate another investigation to check if the same practice was followed in different teams Williams has coached in his career.
After the investigation was revealed, Williams accepted his mistake and apologised for his actions. However, it is expected that the league might fine or ban him.
Former Rams’ head coach, d**k Vermeil, has hoped for the issue to get settled as soon as possible.
He said:
"Hopefully, this is isolated, hopefully the story doesn't get bigger as the investigation goes deeper."
He added:
"Sometimes you can get caught up in the enthusiasm and intensity of the game and it overpowers your judgment. But I like him, he's a good man, and he made a mistake."
Williams has recently joined Rams and as his reputation continues to get hurt, his present team is still maintaining silence. The league is expected to reach a decision in this matter this month.
