A capital letter is generally used to denote the dominant allele and a lower-case letter for the recessive allele.  So, if the allele for short fur is S (dominant allele) and the allele for long fur is s (recessive allele), then parents that have the short fur phenotype, but are heterozygous in genotype (Ss) could have offspring of a different phenotype:

    Ss  x  Ss

    offspring are:

    SS (short fur), 25% chance

    Ss (short fur), 50% chance

    ss (long fur), 25% chance
