Gregory Bourdy gets into contention at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi
Frenchman Grégory Bourdy fired an eight-under par 64 on Friday and shared the second place midway through the second round of the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi. The European Tour event is being held at the Royal Park I Roveri.
Bourdy was among the early starters of the day, when the conditions were completely favourable to the players.
There were almost no winds and the pleasant weather proved to be an added advantage to the beautiful playing conditions at the venue course.
He started off on the front nine of the course and parred the opening hole, prior to picking up the pace on the second hole with a birdie.
He then continued his great touch with the clubs and recorded another three birdies on the third, fifth and the seventh hole for a four-under par score, before the turn.
In the meantime, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño of Spain surged to the top of the leaderboard with an 11-under par two-round score.
Therefore, the Frenchman still had a great deal of work to do on the leaderboard. However, he did not care much about the lead, and earned another four shots on the back nine to take the share of the clubhouse lead.
"This morning it was perfect conditions to play on this course,” Bourdy said. "It was a lovely round and I enjoyed it a lot. I was very solid and I'm very proud. Almost everything went right today. Last week my driving was wonderful and so were my irons,
and that continued today”.
"For a few weeks now I've played very well and have made some good scores. I had an eight under par round in Crans-sur-Sierre and a six under at Gleneagles, and last week I finished eighth, so I feel very confident with my game”.
Later in the day, Richard Bland of England added another 66 to his scorecard and took the outright lead with a 12-under par two-round score.
He got off to a steady start on Friday, as he carded a birdie on the first hole and followed that up with nine straight pars. He then picked up some pace and recorded five birdies on the last eight holes that he played.
