Gregory Bourdy leads the Alfred Dunhill Championship after the first round
The opening round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship went underway with the top golfers competing on the fairways of the Leopard Creek Country Club.
Gregory Bourdy ended his first round with a one shot lead over his rivals. He displayed a spectacular round of golf. Bourdy carded a laudable 6-under 66.
The Frenchman is the sole leader after the first round, whereas the second place is being shared by six players.
He did not concede a single bogey and went on to register six birdies during his first day exploits.
The South African, Charl Schwartzel, is one of the top contenders for the title. He had a decent first day on the course. However, he was not up to the same pace as the Frenchman, who played flawless golf.
Schwartzel recently won a title in Thailand. Therefore, he has no problems with his confidence. The South African’s recorded a 5-under 67 on his first day on the African course.
Four South African golfers, including Schwartzel, shared the second place with an English duo. The professional golfer, Branden Grace, was placed in a respectable 8th position with his 4-under 68.
Meanwhile, the first round for the 5th ranked golfer in the world, Louis Oosthuizen, fell way below what was expected of him.
His twelfth hole is what caused problems for Oosthuizen. His score on the hole was quadruple-bogey. Henceforth, the South African, Oosthuizen completed his round with a one-over 73.
The current leader of the tournament, Bourdy, has won on the Sunshine Tour of South Africa before as well. He has also won three times on the European Tour.
The Frenchman recorded three birdies on the first-nine and the other three on the back-nine.
Schwartzel had one of the best years of his golf career last year but struggled with a chest injury since then.
When asked about his performance on the first day of the Alfred Dunhill Championship, Schwartzel said, “It's a nice start”. Schwartzel said. “Whenever you can start off with a 5 under it’s good. Like I always say, you can't win on the first day, but you
can sure lose it”.
